Legacy and Impact

Dr. Hude Quan

Dr. Hude Quan was the founding force behind QUAN-CORE and a foundational figure in health informatics at the University of Calgary. He helped establish the Centre for Health Informatics as a collaborative hub for data science, research, and interdisciplinary partnerships.

His excellence, leadership, and impact were recognized through more than 20 distinguished awards and honours, including recognition from Thomson Reuters, the Canadian Cardiovascular Society, Hypertension Canada, the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, and the Killam Annual Professorship.

He held key leadership roles with the World Health Organization and championed innovative methods to analyze healthcare data for research and policy. His work in administrative data validation, comorbidity measurement, and population health research left a lasting international mark, including algorithms still used by researchers around the world to define comorbidities in ICD-coded data.

The lab carries his name and his philosophy: the best health data research is done in close partnership with the people who use it.
